Jamjars was created by DoodleIT. After looking at other CMS we came to the conclusion that they were too complicated for the average user and simple tasks were taking far too much time to achieve.

Modules or Groups

In Jamjars all pages belong to modules.  A module is just a folder where related pages are stored.  A small website may just have a General module containing 2 or 3 pages.  Larger websites will have several modules such as News for all new pages, About for several about pages such as history, directors and maybe a page for community support work or sponsorships.  Modules usually but not always follow the sites main navigation.  Within each module pages usually have a sub navigation in the left column for all pages within that module.  Modules organise your pages.

Important considerations

When using any content management system it is vital that you do not paste content in from other programs such as Word or Excel.

The reason for this is that these programs contain styling such as font colour and size which conflicts with the HTML and styling of your website making the text look unprofessional.

The solution if you have to copy from Word is to paste it into a program called Notepad and then re copy it from Notepad and then paste it into Jamjars.

We always recommend typing directly into Jamjars.

Logging into Jamjars

Go to:

URL: E.g. (Don’t use the WWW part)
Username: This is your email address used for your account
Password:  password

Forgotten password

If you have forgotten you password click on the forgotten password link on the login page and enter your URL and registered email address.  A randomly generated password will be emailed to you.  This is secure as passwords are encrypted in the database.

If you need to force a particular password please contact us via email.  Passwords should be made up of letters, numbers and a special character for added security such as ^ * or !

E.g. 01doodleit01^

Creating pages

If you have the option of adding pages there will be a link in Jamjars which says add a new page and clicking on this will open up a new page.  To see if you can add more pages click on a module to open it up.

Note:  Not all modules can have new pages added to them.

Creating categories

Images in galleries are usually organised by categories.
To create a category type a name for the category in the Category Title box and click the Add Category button.

Adding images

To add an image first make sure the image you want to upload is resized to 700px high, the width doesn’t matter.  This will ensure your image displays properly on all monitor sizes.

  1. Next click on a category under categories in the left hand column.
  2. Choose Add Image.
  3. Give your image a description for your visitors to read.
  4. Click browse to find the image you want to upload.
  5. If the image hasn’t been uploaded yet click Upload.
  6. Then Click browse at the bottom of the open box.
  7. Double click on the image you want to upload.
  8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 to add more images.
  9. Click upload button bottom right of open box.
  10. Click browse top right of open box and select your image to add to the gallery.
  11. Click add image to finish.

Deleting images and editing image descriptions

  1. Click on the image you want to edit.
  2. You can now change the title of the image
  3. To delete the image click on the image again and choose OK to confirm deletion.

Editing category names

  1. Just click edit which is next to the category name and change it.

Search engine optimisation tips

Image descriptions are used by search engines so be aware of this when using descriptions. Describe your image accurately.

Adding content and styling

Main page Titles

You will find these at the top of every page on your website.  We call them H1 or heading 1. It’s important to make sure they correspond to what the page is about.

Search engines use them to see what your page is about so be aware of this when naming them non descriptively as in About.  Rather say About DoodleIT or something that means more as about could be about anything!

In modules they are also used in the navigation.  Page titles cannot contain the following characters:

& or ‘

Using headings best practice

You have 2 other headings to make use of and these will be styled across all pages of your website for consistency.  You will find them in the drop down list on the toolbar called paragraph.

Use headings 2 for main sections and heading 3 for sub sections.
Headings must be on a separate line and to apply a heading highlight the text and choose the heading from the paragraph drop down list.

Adding text to your pages

Adding text is easy, just type it in!

Create new paragraphs by hitting the enter key on your keyboard or to simply go down 1 line and force a line break (br) press and hold the shift key and hit enter.

We don’t recommend using underline or bold as underline generally means a link and can be confusing for users.

Always use the pre styles heading 2 and heading 3 from the paragraph drop down list.

Adding images to your pages

Before uploading images please resize them to a reasonable size, we recommend about 600px wide.  Jamjars can they resize them again later and your page loading times will be much quicker.

To insert an image create a new line in your page by pressing the enter key on your keyboard.  Make sure your cursor is on this new line.

  1. Click on the little green tree icon on the toolbar OR right click and choose insert/edit image.
  2. Click on the little browse button to choose / click on the image you want to use.  (If you haven’t uploaded the image yet follow steps 3 to 7 below)
  3. Type in a Title to describe your image
  4. Click on appearance and from here you can change the image width or height, not both as changing one will automatically change the other to constrain the image proportion.
  5. You can also select img_left or img_right from the Style drop down list to position your image and flow your text around it.
  6. Click insert when done and to finish.
  7. To upload a new image click on upload.
  8. Click on browse bottom left of the open box.
  9. Browse to your resized image and upload.
  10. Click on browse top right of open box, select your image by double clicking and continue from point 3 above.

Adding links to other websites or to pages within your website

  1. Select the words you want for the link text by highlighting them with the mouse.
  2. Click insert/edit link.
  3. Type or paste in the destination address in the Link URL box, must be full URL  e.g.
  4. Type in a title to describe the link.
  5. Click insert to finish.

Whether it’s a page within your website or a link to elsewhere the same procedure applies.

Adding links to sections on the same page (Anchor links)

Adding PDF downloads

  1. Select the words you want for the link text by highlighting them with the mouse.
  2. Click insert/edit link.
  3. Type or paste in the destination address in the Link URL box, must be full URL.  E.g.
  4. Type in a title to describe the link.
  5. Click insert to finish.

Adding YouTube hosted videos

  1. Upload your video to YouTube.
  2. Copy the URL of the video.
  3. Open your Jamjars page and create a new line to insert the video into.
  4. Click on the little movie icon on the toolbar.
  5. Paste the YouTube URL you copied into the file/URL box and optionally you can insert ?url=0 after the URL to stop ads appearing.
  6. Change the width to about 400px.
  7. Click insert to finish.

More on search engine optimisation

Your page content

This is probably the most important aspect of your search engine optimisation effort.  Ensure that your chosen primary search phrase appears 3 times in the text, beginning sentence, middle of page and last sentence.  This is a good starting point.  A nice example of a search phrase for a page could be:

Mobile Websites North Wales

It’s good firstly because it’s exactly what the page is about and secondly because it geo targets an area where most of our customers come from.

This primary search phrase should also be your Main Page Title which you’ll find in Jamjars just above your content.

Meta title tag

Your primary search phrase goes here again.

Meta description

A fuller description but must include your primary search phrase not at the beginning but after the first 2 or 3 words.  So using the example above:
